"A Fault Tolerant License Number Correlation Algorithm for Specific Vehicle Confirmation in Parking Lots"

Many license plate recognition system applications require the correlation of a newly read license number with a license number that was previously loaded into a database. This pertains specifically to permitting access control to facilities like residential gated communities, corporate parking facilities and other secure limited access facilities. This capability is also used for white list correlation at the exit of an airport parking lot and during a survey of the vehicles in a campus parking lot.

TDS has worked with CarCode Corporation to develop a set of algorithms specifically designed for correlation of a license plate number with a fixed set of plate numbers previously stored in a database. The CarCode team of machine vision specialists from the University of California San Diego have signficant experience in the development of LPR correlation techniques. With the use of high resolution digital camera images, this application provides excellent correlation performance in these applications.

The accuracy of the plate matching process is directly related to the pixel density of the image and the noise characteristics of the camera. The system works well with the 2 and 5 megapixel camera systems that are provided by TDS as part of its image capture systems.
